Another spellbinding addition to the award-winning Sara Stories!

Marc-Allan Cameron hasn't felt alive in 30 years. For Sadie Finkel, it's been more than 50. When life comes knocking, will they let it in?

"A gem of a book from a brilliant writer!"

After Sara Year The Sara Stories edition by Mark David Gerson Literature Fiction eBooks

One of my favourite novels from 2015 was “Sara’s Year”, which I described in my review as ‘a great Jewish novel’. “Sara’s Year” was meant to be a standalone piece of fiction, but Mark David Gerson’s readers (myself included) demanded more, and luckily the author caved in. Cue “After Sara’s Year”, a new addition to what will become a series of standalone novels, to be read in no particular order.

There is something oddly comforting about immersing yourself in a novel whose characters you are already familiar with, and although several months had passed since reading its predecessor, I immediately felt drawn back into the story. As well as telling us what happens next, “After Sara’s Year” digs deep into the lives of some of the minor characters from the previous book: Mac, Erik and Sadie. I found Sadie’s story the most engrossing and from that point onwards I could not stop reading. Without giving away any spoilers, I think the point the author is making is that, there is always a story. Although we don’t have to like somebody, there is always a story - there are always reasons why he or she became that person. And this is something that applies to fiction as much as real life: suspend your judgement and you might understand. Keep reading and you will be surprised.

‘After Sara’s Year’ is another superb, page-turning read, which weaves the varied strands of Jewish culture - its strict morals but also its warmth and unique humour - into a beautiful, complex, sophisticated tapestry. Without a doubt, this series is set to become a new classic of Jewish literature.

For the record Although this is the second book in the Sara Stories series, it magnificently stands alone even if you haven’t read the first book, Sara’s year.

In After Sara’s Year, Gerson takes us deeper into the exploration of Sadie and her past revealing shocking events that shaped the hard-nosed brow-beater we met in Sara’s year. We all know someone like her but wouldn’t dare get close enough to hear about the deeply rooted past hurts and traumas that ultimately formed the rage brewing inside…. perhaps sometimes inside each of us.

Are you ready to face those aspects of you that hold onto to the past… stories that live on, perhaps of victimhood that keep others and the world separate? Be ready! Sometimes your worst enemies are your greatest teachers! And who could be more qualified to teach loving kindness than a wicked witch of an Aunt?

The question is Will her rage lead her to destroy her nephew Bernie’s first art exhibition? Or will there be a straw that breaks this camel’s back?

Whatever happens, this book is undoubtedly another masterpiece in Gerson’s literary exhibition!!! Thank you! I can’t wait for the next one!
There are any number of worthy superlatives and stand-out reasons to praise Mark David Gerson's "After Sara's Year," the second novel in the continuing series of The Sara Stories about the complex and evolving dynamics of a Jewish family in Montreal.

One could understandably cite Gerson's delicately drawn and richly nuanced characters, the complicated pathos of their relationships or the intricate but never tiresome details of the protagonist's family's Jewish heritage and values and language.

But what resonates even more than these strengths is the author's undeniable affection for and attachment to his characters--all of whom are present in some sense from the original novel, "Sara's Year." In this book, it is especially apparent in his unerringly compassionate attention to the unlikely protagonist, Sadie Finkel, who Gerson manages to make simultaneously off-putting and compelling . . . unsettling and sympathetic . . . and ultimately, endearing.

If you can make it to the very end of this tenderly aching read without a sigh or a tear, you're a more stoic soul than I. If after the end, you are not eagerly awaiting the next of Sara's Stories, then we must not have read the same book.
